Whom the Poppies Honor

The fields of Flanders lost forever
As poppies wither and die, paved over…
As new generations are born and grow…
As time marches on as a soldier to war.

The fields of Flanders lost to memory
As memory fades in those who were there…
As memory fades as generations come and go…
Too soon, too soon a historical footnote.

The fields of Flanders lost to time
As age dooms those who remembered…
As life hurries those who should remember
And pause to thank those whom poppies honor.

The fields of Flanders…who remembers?
Must the end begin with moving on?
When poppies are paved over…
And the old house replaced with new?

The fields of Flanders lost forever
As poppies wither and die, paved over…
As new generations are born and grow…
As time marches on as a soldier to war.
